The faster rate at the intermediate stages may be reasonably attributed to the higher temperature of reaction (300') employed after the first hour to facilitate the esterification by removing the water of condensation as fast as it is formed from the reaction medium. [...] 4 3 2 and 1 in alcohol (Table IV) the lowest solubility of about 6% in alcohol being reached with the acid value of about 6. This confirms that the acid value of the ester determines its solubility and a slight increase or decrease in the acid value in the range of 5-7 brings about a substantial change in solubility. [...] A similar variation in solubility of the ester with their acid values has been observed previously by Gardner."160 P. K. CHOUDHURY AND K. N. KHEMKA With petroleum ether the solubility increases with the decrease in acid value the maximum solubility of 92% being achieved by the products having the lowest acid value in the range of 5-7. [...] The decomposition in the presence of the clays is nearly 50% while that in the case of bauxite is 85% the two samples of bauxite yielding nearly the same results."164 MISS R. OSMANI AND D. S. DATAR TABLE I Decomposition of sodium sulphate at 800'. [...] The reaction is proportional to alumina when the alumina content of the mixture is less than that in the above ratio higher proportion of alumina retarding the process.
