The National Indian Association was founded by Mary Carpenter in 1870. The Association’s main objectives were to extend knowledge of India in England, to cooperate with all efforts made for advancing education and social reform in India, and to promote friendly intercourse between English people and the people of India. To fulfill these objectives, the Association started to publish a monthly journal in 1871 called the Journal of the National Indian Association ‘recording educational work and social progress in India, and diffusing information and opinions on Indian subjects’. The journal published articles, reports, notes, correspondences, novels and poems, proceedings of meetings and book reviews.

The journal focused attention on history, social reform, education, literature and women. Novels were serially published. Tekchand Thakur’s ‘The Spoilt Boy’ and Tarak Nath Ganguli’s ‘Shornalata’ were two prominent novels published in the journal. A key topic in the available issues is the importance of medical women in India. Published articles included diverse themes such as gardening, female education, the Hindu family and marriage, primary education, scholarships, home education, and Muslim education. Contributions included: Rama Bai’s ‘Indian Female Education’; V. Krishnama Charier’s ‘Home Education for Hindu Girls’; Narendra Natha Mitra’s ‘Hindu Early Marriage and its Effects’; Philip Magnus’ ‘Importance of Technical Education in India’; J.B. Knight’s ‘Social Intercourse between Europeans and Natives in India’; P. Mukerji’s ‘Education of Children in Bengal’; Charles J. Stone’s ‘Women in Ancient India’; and C.R. Francis’ ‘Medical Education for Native Men’.

The journal also published the proceedings of and the report on the annual meeting of the National Indian Association.
