could go to the villages or even to the cities during the afternoon hours and earn the day's food for the inmates of the Gurukula by begging in the vill4es and in the cities and then return to the Airama in the evening in time for the evening rituals. [...] Dharma consisted of worship of the gods in the form of sacrifices of the consecrations in the form of domestic or Grhya rituals like the initiation (Upanayana) and marriage and of civic law. [...] Thus it is no wonder that at the end of his education the disciple receives from his teacher the final advice in the form in which it is recorded in the passage of the Taittiriya Upanisad referred to at the beginning of this paper. [...] It cannot be understood clearly till a thorough knowledge of oureligious literature more especially the Vedas the Vedavgas the Upanisads and the Puranas and the Bodhisattva literature of the Buddhists and the Tantras of the Jains is attained. [...] When Siva is represented with five heads He is regarded as the source of the five purificatory streams the Ganges the Yamuna the Sarasvati the Brahmaputra and the Sindhu.
