In the first instance the lapse of time between the era of88 QUARTERLY JOURNAL OF THE MYTHIC SOCIETY the pyramids of Egypt and the golden age of temple-building in South India is so much that similar conditions cannot be held to prevail either with the ruler or the ruled in the latter case. [...] There have been instances in the time of Raja Raja III when rich temples like that of Chidambaram 26 having been approached by the poorer ones like the Rämanandievara temple of Tirukkatgpurain had taken the initiative to collect donations from all the specified servants of the temples in the districts within the influence of the Meilteivaras of the former temple either in cash or in kind and h [...] Firstly the cost of the large number of cows the culprit had to endow would mean indirectly a heavy fine imposed on him to meet the ends of justice and secondly the burning of lamps in the temple would not only put the culprit into a mood of repentance and religious respect for the life of fellow-men but would also indirectly increase the financial condition of the temple. [...] An inscription in the second gopura (right entrance) of the Vridhagiris'vara temple at Vriddhachalam 78 specifies provision of two shares for the Vedic scholar and one shares to the puranic scholar in the allotment of share of a colony; Veda vithuku erandu pangu" and "pureila vithuku pangu onrum" indicating the importance and the role of the Vedic and purapic scholars of the locality and the ne [...] 3"104 QUARTERLY JOURNAL OF THE MYTHIC SOCIETY Another inscription 88 on the north wall of the first pl.-a-kb-1-a of the central shrine in Arunachalds'vara temple at Tiruvannamalai refers to the invoking of the Goddes of Learning and Edution to stay and sway in that part of the land.
