The Vedic ritual of sacrifice is seen to involve the notion of the prpitiation of the gods by the sacrifice of animals at the altar. [...] The Hota is speech the Udgiita is breath ; the Adhvanyu is the eye ; the Brahma is the mind; the Fires (several denominational ones of the sacrifice) are the ears. [...] The two strings of the instrument stand in the relation of 15 to 16 as determined by the number of vibrations which each produces when vibrated without the use of frets ; that is if the note produced by the drone is taken to be C or sadja the fundamental note of the Indian musical scale the notARYAN AND THE ABORIGINAL CULTURES 99 produced by the string passing over the frets is B or kais'iki or [...] The causes of the war were as usual the non-payment of the chauth by Haidar for the two previous years and the failure on the part of both to observe the treaty made at the end of the previous war in 1767. [...] Haidar next moved north to a considerable distance upto the Tungabhadra for the attack of Kurnool on the pretext that the two lakhs of rupees taken by the chief of that place in the previous year for the work of mediation between Haidar and the Nizam ought to have been returned since the Nizam had not fulfilled the terms of the treaty.
