The betterment of other conditions in rural India can only be secured by the coordination of many factors and the most important is the increase of the wealth of the farmer the resultant of a combination of the many features which tend to higher production the better marketing of what he grows and the.ororgices of susAiry interests which can in some way or the other add according to circum [...] AT recent meetings of both the Advisory Board of the Imperial Council of Agrcultural Research and of the Indian Central Cotton Committee there has been a good deal of discussion regarding what we are now calling ' projects '.* During the meeing of the Indian Central Cotton Committee at Lyallpur (Punjab) in November 1938 Sir Chunilal Mehta asked the writer to draw up the outline of a scheme [...] A point in this scheme that merits special notice is that in addition to the improvement of the technique and economies of farming the improvement of the farmer as a man and of his social conditions receive attention. [...] Bridging the gap The success of this type of project has been very marked particularly in the work of the Soil Conservation Service of America.
