Indian Farming September 1943

1943

Sir John visited India during the cold weather of 1936 for reviewing the work (soils and crops side) of the Imperial Council of Agricultural Research at the request of the Government of India. [...] He also addressed the teachers and students of the Calcutta University at the invitation of the Vice-Chancellor and the Syndicate. [...] On the other hand steps were taken at the same time to improve the working of the rest of the farms in the watershed and make them more productive. [...] What we want to know from a soil survey is the best way of utilizing the land in question ; in other words the approach to a soil survey should be not from the point of view of its origin but from that of its productivity in relation to different types of plants so as to secure the best utilization of the land possible. [...] The first is to analyse the soil as well as the leaves of the plant and compare the results with the analysis of soils and leaves where the plant grows exceptionally well.
