Indian Farming April 1943

1943

4 Entry of Japan into the war The next important event in the progress of the war which had a marked effect upon the course of agricultural prices in India was the entry of Japan into the war in December 1941 and the subsequent occupation of the Dutch East Indies Malaya Burma etc. [...] Meanwhile as a result of hostilities in the Far East prices of oilseeds also showed improvement mainly on account of the shutting out of supplies of kersene oil from Burma and lubricating oils on the East Coast of India and also due to the heavy curtailment in the import of copra and coconut oil from Ceylon. [...] The proceeds of this additional duty were to be credited to a special fund which was to be utilized for the benefit of the growers of certain lower grades of cotton which used to be exported in large quantities to the Far Eastern countries before the entry of Japan in the war. [...] The food problem At the end of 1942 the cotton market pulled up and prices ruled firm and improved consideably partly due to rising values of cotton textiles reduction in acreage in 1942-43 as a result of the Grow More Food campaign and partly due to low production of the Egyptian crop and the improvement in the position of the United Nations in different war theatres. [...] At present the spawn is purchased and planted in a tank without any knowledge of the condition of the tank or the nature of the spawn and the results are not very satisfactory.
