Indian Farming October 1948

1948

An idea of the extent of damage which this insect is capable of causing can be had from the fact that during the severe Pyrilla epidemic of 1937-38 in the western United Provinces the recovery of sugar in mills decreased consderably in heavily attacked areas and it became difficult for the cultivator to make good quality gar from the infested crop. [...] OCTOBER 1948 401CONTROL OF SUGARCANE LEAF HOPPER (PYRILLA Sr.) IN THE UNITED PROVINCES (Avena sativa) early maize (Zea mays) early fodder crop of jowar (Andropogon sorghum) shoots of the ratoon and October-planted crop of sugarcane are the main carriers of the pest from the preceding years' crop of sugarcane to that of the succeeding year. [...] ( n account of the feeding by innumerable nymphs and adults of Pyrilla some of the leaves ary up with the result that the growth of cane is adversely affected and subsequently the yield. [...] It would also vary with the variety of cane particularly the nature of the leaf sheath whether loose or tight the number of dry leaves per cane at the time of stripping and also the number of canes to be stripped per acre. [...] (2) Damage to eye-buds by frost : As pointed out above in this note the germinating capacity of the eye-buds in the United Provinces instead of decreasing actually increased by stripping of the infested cane because redution in the number of Pyrilla improved the quality of the plant as a whole and the crop stood the bad effects of frost better.
