This interpretation seems to be justifiable in as much as the A gra t th a tree hears fruit at the summer season when the moon becomes full in ;'/Yttt./-H-i and the sun arrives at P tt.ya. At the time of ninini the arrival of the sun at the constellation of l'it.v(1 marked the time of summer season and summer solstice. [...] The reason why these Nak.?atras are called the tail and the mouth of the serpent seems to be the frquency of eclipses when the serpent Srarbhfinu is believed to devour the sun at solar and the moon at lunar eclipses. [...] The situation of the solstices in Piirvabhadrapada and firraphalguni is mentioned in the hymn on Rohita in the A tharvaveda : it says that at one end of the thread18 R. SHAMA SASTRY held by Prajdpati rested A :la Ekapdda and that the other end of the thread lay at PUrvaph alguni.* What deserves special attention in this connection is the significance and purpose of the sacrificial victims such as [...] The defeated planet is tied to the foot-hold or top of the -V anaspati the A krattha tree to be disposed of at the will of the winner. [...] The binding of Sunakepa thrice in his former births in one or three former Kalpas and the recurrence of the same binding in the present Ka1pa referred to in verse 12 is no more than the recurrence of the Rohita-type of the three eclipses of the previous cycle of 1000 days.
