Indian Linguistics -a Quarterly Bulletin of the Linguistic Society of India

1944

At the outset I want to make it clear that this paper is intended just to outline the tendency and the transtion of the Modern East Bengali rhythmic patterns The study of the transition to patterns peculiar to the Slav and Romanic languages has made great headway. [...] Chatterji's explanation of these as `Recursives' has not been very happy and we have thought it fit to criticize his views in a separate paper published in the `Proceedings of the 2nd Convention of the Teachers of the Deaf in India' to which the reader is referred. [...] It is now a common experience in East Bengal speech that the aspirated forms have been completely deaspirated and the muscular tension retained is the only essential difference between the aspirated and non-aspirated forms ; and this is sometimes attended by a different pitch pattern to make the differentiation between the apirated and the non-aspirated forms more pronounced and to make word [...] My contention is that 51 sound has shifted much forward to the anterior portion of the tip of the tongue' from the former position on the top of the tongue for the similar reason that the modern speed requirement of East Bengali speech is not to be satisfied by a further back 51. [...] The Halbas are connected with the Rajas of Bastar and they say that originally they belonged to the Telugu country and came with the chiefs of Bastar from Waragal in the south.
