THE MIDDLE EAST Following the news that the Egyptian Government has approached the British Government for a revision of the 1936 Treaty comes the news that the Egyptian Finance Minister threatens to resign if the British Government does not agree to the abolition of the Briish Cotton Export Control Committee. [...] While as we had the occasion to remark in these columns in cloth of medium counts the mills have the field all to themselves and there is no point in diverting the yarn-supply from mills to handlooms in this respect in the finer qualities of cloth which cater to individual tastes the position of the handloom weaver is impregnable and here the problem of yarn-supply must be solved in his favour [...] This is the conclsion to be drawn from the trends of the official indices of wholesale prices and cost of living stated and pdblished by the office of the League of Nations. [...] Nationalization of industries and agriculture might perhaps cut at the root of the tangle of changes in the owneship of property in the wake of temporary domintion by the Nazis in the West and by the Japanese in the East. [...] In the inter-war period in spite of the tendency towards public ownership of the means of production and particularly of transport throughout the contnent of Europe the system of private enterprise and private ownership of industry and land was still the ruling system.
