THE EASTERN ECONOMIST 89 THE WEEK'S NOTES THE FIRST FRUITS OF DEVALUATION Two officials of the British treasury and one reprsenting the Board of Trade will shortly be discussing with the Government of India the details of the AnglIndian sterling balances agreement as modified last July. [...] At a time when Government is faced with the alternatives of restricting the expasion of the telephone service or making a levy of advance payment for the service over a period of twenty years the latter is clearly the preferable choice. [...] There is today in the United States the paradoxical situation that when a policy of some kind in relation to the budget has been framed the rigidities of the budget in practice defeat the implementation of that policy; this paradox is to be traced to tax reductions made by the 80th Congress. [...] The first big problem was to put the administrative machinery in working order and it certainly redounds to the credit of the authorities of this railway that in spite of difficulties commencing right from the question of housing the headquarters they tackled it with detemination and resourcefulness. [...] These measures iclude the stocking of all available fry and fingerlings of the 1949 season during the next two to three months in tanks belonging to the Government or local bodies and in privately-owned tanks; the supply of information to the Central Government relating to the local availability of sufficient fish seed or the need for supplies from suplus areas and the water areas to be stoc
