In any case the Indonesian political settlement is in many respects parallel to the problem of the interation of the Indian States; in both cases the transfer of power was essential to successful integration and in both it has been demonstrated that the presence of a third party in the role of an authoritative mediato only hindered and never helped agreement. [...] Possibly the enhanced popularity of the Socialists due to their non-acceptance of the Hague agreements and the personality of Sjahrir may in course of time align the forces of the Left while the Masjumi party with its half-liberal and half-conservative Islamic background may mobilise the rightist elements making for a more clear-cut party division even if the implacable Comunists and the unreco [...] But this question regarding the future role of Islam points to the existence of a gap in the political faith of a people newly awakened to freedom; briefly the gap is due to the absence of a 'weltanschauung' which could enthuse a whole people to effort and act as a focus of allegiance even to rival groups which differ in their approach to the question of the realisation of a commonly accepted phi [...] It is the accident to the goods train the root cause of the major accident that sdems to be the real issue in this disaster and the frequently repeated allegation namely that a major reason for the present succession of disasters is the introduction 250 THE EASTERN ECONOMIST August 18 1950.
