As in Korea where the original goal of the unifiation of its people has at least for the present been modified to stabilise the division at the 38th Parallel this strengthening of Japan will virtually be a consolidation of what in effect will be the frontiers of the free world. [...] But the scope of the Ordinance is even wider than the countering of the threat in the railways and includes the prevention of sympathetic or other strikes in any of the essential services like road transport dockyards and postal and telegraphic services. [...] The revelation of a Government decision to agree to the export of 30 000 tons by the Sugar Industry has helped to estalish that little serious thought was given at that stage to the details of the sugar problem by auyone; and the remarks of the Committee that it is difficult to say which motive actually ruled the men that mattered" hardly constitute a helpful answer to the suspiciors that wer [...] The significance of the trial to the free world is the clinching proof it has given of the utter dislike of the Iron Curtain countries to expose the truth al-oot their own Governments or their methods to those living outside and their determination to exercise the most hideous measures to prevent the free flow cf iformation either within their territory or outside the curtain. [...] The fallingykff in the surplus for the second quarter of 1951 is attrbuted to the increase in expenditure on imports from the dollar area both by the U. K. and other countries of the sterling area the decline in earnings from eports to dollar areas from the rest of the sterling area which was in part seasonal and the reduction in the net gold and dollar receipts from non-dollar coutries
