He quotes extensively from the Bulletin of the United States Bureau of Education to show how the health of the rising generation of the states is the subject of anxious concern to the educat [...] But to be satiffied with learning the grammatical 4spects of the setences only without trylvg to know the sublime and beautiful ideas and thoughts underlying the sentences is to learn !nothing —it is to take the husk leaving the corn to take the water rejecting the milk take the trash to the rejection of the essence. [...] specimen of the living together of the guru and the sishya the teacher and the taught—the teacher living the life of the taught and the taught the life of the teacher both equally free equally responsive to the slow and unconscious influences of each other's life. [...] It is on the contrary the life of Christ the Son of God who "lived moved and had his being" among the men on earth who partook of their infirities wept over their graves and bled for them on the cross that so miraculously fascinated the popular mind and humbled to the dust the strong prejudices of the synagogue and of the academy and the mighty swords of the Roman legions. [...] The dull routine work in the class room the cut-and-dry methods of teaching the well-thought-out and rigorous steps for discipline make it all a formal busness which represses the genial flow of the buoyant spirit of the child ; and the child in consequence pants for the hour when upon the dismission of the school his spirit long repressed within the prison cell of the school room will burs
