At the branches the oservations are made morning and evening at an hour common to all ; so are common the questions to be answered ; the hour they are made ; the readings of the barometer and thermometer the dpression ; the fall of rain/in the twelve hours : the direction of tne wind its force and if the locality has any special controlling fact to register. [...] The productions might not bear comparison with the later ones of the author ; but nevertheless they were the happy forecast of a glorious future and are of use to the critic in tracing the growth of the poetic genius which flowered later in life. [...] What the opinion of the day was may be seen from the columns of the " Sunday Times " and " Atlas." The reviewers were of opinion that Mr Richardson had done lasting service to the cause of English education in India by publishing the best thoughts of the best English writers by pointing out that the best means of culture is the study of Literature and by offering at the same time the best defe [...] In token of their gratitude for the services he had done to them the tutors and the students of the Hindu College presented him au address and a vase of silver He also ohtained good testimonials from Lord Auckland the then Governor-General and from Sir Edward Ryan the then President of the Council of Education. [...] " His Honour desires me to say that he shall feel great satisfaction in nominating you to the appointment (of Principal of the Hindu College) and he is fully sensible that he is consulting the interests of the State in securing the services of an officer so able and zealous as yours lf in the cause of Education."
