He admitted that the glow of freedom was not visible or the face of the common man.' Re advised the people however to be patient and to reo.lise the difficulties of the Government. [...] In spite of their possession of power and the high prestige that they enjoyed throughout the country as the trusted followers of the Mahatma they were not sure that they would be able to retain it and secure the execution of their policies without the help of a vote-catching and support-gathering poltical instrument like the Congress. [...] Another consideration that might have weighed with him was the desire to give an equal chance after the attainment of independence to all political parties and groups in the country in the matter of Winning the votes of the people. [...] HUMANISM cultivates the sense of the order rhythm sublmity and beauty of the universe through our expetiencing the beautiful in the natural world and the arts. [...] In a word this brief guide to the state of the Soviet Union when the Bolsheviks were still fighting for their very existence long before the collectivisatioii the Five-Year Plans the purges and the German war turns out to be by far the most penetrating analysis known to me of the fundamental state of Russia in 1949.
