THE present Memoir forms the seventh of the series of publications dealing with an Initestigation into the Value of an Etherized Vaccine in the Prophylactic Treatment of Rabies ' which has been carried out at the Pasteur Institute of India Kasauli. [...] Once Semple’s method of treatment with carholized vaccine was introduced in these two Institutes the necessity for the restriction of Pasteur treatment to the hills ceased and other Institutes were opened in various provinces : the Pasteur Institute Rangoon in 1915 ; the King Edward Memorial Institute Shillong in 1917 ; the anti-rabic section of the Haffkine Institute Bombay in 1922 and the [...] The introduction in the same year of other methods which raised the period of obsevation from 3 to 6 months and which obtained information from 80 per cent of the treated population showed that the older figures recorded less than half of the deaths discovered by the new method and that instead of a general mortality and failure rate of 0.79 and 0.39 the figures were 1.86 and 1.16 per cent [...] It was announced during the course of discussions on the value of the etherized method that Hempt owing to the occurrence of a number of cases of paralysis folloing treatment with his original etherized vaccine had discontinued the use of a8 Etherized Vaccine in the Prophylactic Treatment of Rabies.
