1925

As the seed of this pulse is frequently contaminated in India the first condition in the investigation of the cause of lathyrism was the growth in pure culture of Lathyrus sativus and of the various weeds met with in this crop. [...] The seed of the bagged plants was sown separately seed by seed in October 1922 and by the end of the third season 1923-24 the elementary species were separated from the heterozygotes the minute vegetative and floral characters were determined and a preliminary classification of the types made. [...] In addition to the study of the weeds raised from the thirty samples of mixed khesari the fields of the cultivators in the perg unnah of Barail (a low-lying rice tract in the Tirhut Division of North Bihar in which khesari is widely cultivated and where cases of lathyrism are common) were kept under observation. [...] The negative results yielded by the chemical examination and also by the feeding trials in the case of all three of these weeds taken in conjunction with the fact that none of them were found in all the 30 samples of khesari from the tracts where lathyrism occurs point to the harmlesness of these plants. [...] 1. Lathyrus sativus L. In view of the reputed connection of the consumption of the seeds of Lathyrus sativus with lathyrism it was necessary in the first instance to test carefully the pure seeds with the object of isolating if possible some active principle.
