The greater the development of the individual conscousness as distinct from the tribal and the social the greater is the possibility of a rebellion within the mental realm and a consequent disintegration of the psychic structure. [...] The history of the fight of the occupancy ryots for greater rights over the soil reflects the imperfection of the system and the resistance to the demands of the zemindar would have come in its own time even if the Government had not prohibited by law all illegal exactions. [...] The discerning reader can see how in the local legislature the two communities back the two parties from behind a wall of abstract words—the zeal of the Musalman members for the ryots and the agricultural debtors and that of the Hindu members for the zemidars and the mahajans are really aspects of communal fight over the ultimate possession of the fair fields of Bengal.
