Cases which would have been the despair of the munsiff have been unravelled with an uerring intuition born of intimate acquaitance with the habits of life and the mode of thought of the parties." It is very satisfactory to read of this success of the wise old system and it gives an added proof of the capacity of the Indians for self-government. [...] For instance take what I.consider to be the best description in Samskrit Poetry of the loveliest of the seasons—namly the description of Nature on the advent of the spring in the third canto of Kalidasa's Kume►asambhdva. [...] A second defect is that the descrition of Nature takes the form of a dull catlogue of trees and flowers and creepers ; there is no accurate description of the larger and grander phenomena of Nature—of storms of grand mountain scenery the vanishing hues of the gorgeous Indian sunset the pomp and majesty of the Indian morning. [...] Though in the best pc--3 the Hindu ideal of life exercises its compelling influence and forces the poets to go to the Beauty that is at the heart of the universe and render it in verse yet the.:onception that qrqii Tfr Rif* wrgzr has led the poets to extract the maximum of enjoyment out of Nature's manifold beauties without thinking much of the spiritual meaning that is hidden in Nature's bo [...] The State exacts its special services from all and the duty of such servize and the nature of the State's demands must be placed in the forefront of any educational system which aims at the production of good citzens RAI BANKIM CHANDRA CHATTERJEE BAHADUR C.
