The Ripon College Magazine. April 1935

1935

After referring to the increase in the numerical strength from 1504 to 1931 and the distinguished success of the students at the diffeent University Examinations he gave an account of the social and corporate activities of the different sections of the College Union literary and athletic as also of the College Ambulance Division and the University Training Corps. [...] The railway train is symblical of the Unknown and the whistle of the urgent assertive call of the Spirit. [...] For the study of the spectra of the gases we must take the glow emitted by the spark discharge through the rarefied gas as the source of light. [...] Hegel has nicely defined the relation between Beauty and Truth in the words Truth and Beauty are one and the same thing ; the one is the Idea and the other is the manifesation of the Idea." But the approximate inter-relation between Love Beauty and Truth can be briefly stated thus : Truth is the idea of Beauty in itself while Love is the spirit the impulse that transforms the idea into man [...] There is now a happy mixture of the analytic and the synthetic tempers though the anlytic temper always predominates— we not only want the beauty of the 'whole' but also the beauty of its several `parts' each of which is part and parcel of the whole.
