The war still drags on its weary way taking vast toll of human lives and fortunes destructive of the gifts both of the past and the present and blighting the promise of the future. [...] The bewildering variety of phenomena the constant stream of new facts and discoveries the revolutionary character of many of them and the intangible nature of the agent itself combined to render the formulation of an all-embracing theory difficult. [...] But as Robert Campbell says in the present state of our knowledge no certain statement can be attained as to the whole number of electrons in an atom but the conclusion that the mass of the atom is the sum of the masses of the electrons contained in it is so attractive that it seems desirable to accept it provisionally in the absence of any conclusive evidence to the contrary."
