This leads to the conclusion that the addition of alkali to the solution containing the highest ratio of Al203 : M20 does not cause any fundamental change in the constitution of the solution and the increase in the pH of solutions containing lower ratios of Al203 : M20 is merely due to the increase in the OH' ion concentration on account of the added alkali."THE HYDROGEN ION CONCENTRATIONS 5 The d [...] It will be seen from Table I that on increasing the amount of eerie ammonium nitrate in the gel-forming mixture (i) the final values of pu and pv decrease (ii) the rate of increase in intensity of the scattered light and opacity that is the rate of growth of the gel particles decreases and (iii) the time of setting of the gel increases. [...] Since the zero of the instrument is adjusted with pinene as the standard the opacity of the system is mostly due to the gel phase that is the number and size of the particles or the amount of the dispersed phase. [...] of the solvent ; t the temperature of the system at which the readings were taken and T the temperature of setting of the gels. [...] The results given in Tables I and II bring out that for gels contaiing the same amount of aluminium nitrate (i) the final values of pu and pv are higher (ii) the rate of increase in intensity of the scattered light and opacity that is the rate of growth of the gel particles increases and (iii) the time of setting decreases with an increase in the amount of potassium molybdate.
