The first of these dates is that of the sccoN11 ) CONVOCATION which as already stated was held at the completion o' of the first century after the death of SiKYA or before the birth of Chrli t 443 ; and the other that of the THIRD CONVOCATION which was iicyd before Christ 30S in the 17th year of Asoico’s reign falling resj.ictively to the dates of the Buddhistical era 100 and 235. [...] The first of those prophecies refers to Ceylt 1 and is given in the first sentence of the 7th and the last of the Gth chaCiter of the Maluitvanso. [...] The second prophecy is thus introduced in the 17th chapter of the 211androanso propounded by the there AlAiiINDO in the account of the arriv al and enshrinemcnt in Ceylon in the reign of the Ceylonese monarch DEwtNANPIIIATISSO of certain corporal relics of SAICYA. [...] The said two persons the one the preceptor and the other the orilainer of MOGGALIPUTTATISSO having deposited the whole of the word of BUDD110 in his hands and lived the ordinary measure of human exiatence demised. [...] Inquiring ' who is this NIGRODHO he wag told he was the son of prince Sum allo the eldest of the sons of the raja BINDUSA:RO." The narrative of the Atthakathci then enters into the personal history Of NIGRODHO the flight of his mother pregnant of him from PcOilipura - on the occasion of his father and the other sons of BINDUSAiRO being massacred—his birth education and admission into Buddhis
