The result was that I have boon able in the case of Mahot to lay out some of the general outlines of the city the gates and the main street of the eastern part and I think I havv determined what the chief mounds in that quarter represent. [...] The ruins of Set Malta stand on the west bank of the Rapti where that river crosses the boundary between the modern districts of Bahraich and Gonda in the province of Oudli. [...] It seems to mo that Set is a corruption of Sawatthi and that it probably came to be applied eventually by visitors to the Jetavana as it was the chief attraction after the decline of the city which though larger was but a decayed ruin and was less attractive to the pilgrim. [...] I think we cannot accept the identification of Champakapuri with Sot Afahot as the capital of Kosala in the days of Yudishthir and the Mahabharata. [...] It is likely that the fact of the vihtira being erected outside the city and the unwillingness of Jets to part with the site were owing to tho opposition of the older schools and Stiriputta's deputation to superintend the erection of the vihara was his commission as a pioneer to prepare tho way for the entry of the now teacher with duo circumstance.
