the ioid-mark the two footprints and that portion of the hill called ' the house.' The existence of Buddha's footprint and the numerous inscriptions on the summit of the hill and a footprint and inscriptions at the S. E. base wore however unknown to the villagers until I pointed them out. [...] The residence of the Yaksha.-1st "Above this mountain top is the old residence of the Yaksha (Vakula)." This to the present day is one of the sights of the hill. [...] The inner border of the footprint is also a natural line and the depresion of the heel and sole seem also natural; but the rock forming the ball of the groat toe and the marks of the toe-tips has all been artficially chipped the operation having been assisted by the rook in this situation slightly tending to scale or peel off in one or two layers. [...] I have left the identification of this site to the last because the whole of the old surface of the S. E. corner of the bill has been removed by blasting and the markings on the rock here must have been demolished by the quarriers. [...] The purity of the Buddhism—no purity of the form of Buddhism prevailing at this establishment is evidenced by the almost total asence of S'ivaio images and the very orthodox nature of the truly Buddhist images and this is in keeping with Ilium Tsiang's statement that most of the monasteries in this district were of the Hinayana school—the more primitive and pure sect.
