In view of the scarcity of food prevalent in the country and the Groy More Food' campaign a careful examination of edible Dioscoreas is very likely to help solution of the food problem. [...] The authors have therefore attempted to give in this contribution detailed information on the known edible as well as the less known Indian wild species of yams partly from the available literature and partly from the results of their field and herbarium studies in order to stimulate encourage and help the cultivators to grow yams along with other cereals and crops. [...] The rapid advance made in scientific yam culture in America the Philippines New Guinea Java and the Far East where the yams form more or less important articles of the diet of the people have resulted in the production of several edible varieties of thuch better quality than hitherto known to us by applcation of modern scientific methods of horticulture. [...] The time taken for the maturity of the crop varies according to the quality of the particular species and varieties grown the nature of the edaphic and climatic conditions of the area where they are cultivated and the attention paid to them during cultivation but normally the period extends from 8 to 10 months from the time of first planting. [...] In the light of current knowledge the total number of Indian Dioscoreas considered as distinct species is 30 only out of 200 species known to science from the Tropics and Subtropics of which about 16 species and a few cultivated varieties of some of these species are used as important sources of food in different parts of the country.
