The people are the paymasters and the Prince and the officials are their servants who have to do the will of their masters. [...] Most of them as devout Christians had a strong leaning towards pacifism and the representatives of the Chinese and the Negro races having felt the iron heel of oppression of the Japanese miltarism and the militarism of the White races respectively were deeply interested in the method of non-violence as a weapon for resisting militaristic aggression. [...] After three years of contact with the work of the Fellowship of Reconciliation among the students he changed his views and began to make a distinction between the Japanese people and the Japanese military machine. [...] They are today depending upon the sweet will not of the Rulers but of the advisers of the Rulers ; tomorrow they will share power with the people because they are of the people. [...] It is not as if they will be crushed by the so-called Gujarati majority and if the majority gets its share of the crumbs of office that should not be a matter for noparticipation by the Maharashtrians in the struggle for liberty.
