1948

[...] If in the analysis of the being no pemanent identity is found and the being is seen as a pure process'of dependent origination where one thing completely changes into another thing without any kind ' of tranference of any thing from one to the other as the flame of a candle in the first watch of the night turning into the flame of the candle of The second watch of that night without any kin [...] The being is not the object of sensation nor is he the subject of sensation nor is he the consciousness binding the object to the subject as the knowledge between the two. [...] At the time of the Buddha Vedic Brahmanism was already in decay and the Buddha pointed out many of its faults —the tendency to substitute the dead letter of the law for its living spirit the belief in the efficacy of ritual and sacrifice particularly animal-sacrifice and its insistence on the caste superiority of the Brahmin.
