[...] The manufactures of the power loom of the West aided by the expansion of the Indian railway system which began to penetrate into the interior of the country and the changing fashion of the English educated middlclass who began to crave for imported articles from the West dealt a severe blow on the indegenous manufactures. [...] It is very gratifying that some of our econmists are taking to the investigation and study of the problems of the village as a result of the growing conviction that the rehabilittion of the villages which constitute the foundation of the structure of Indian political organization is the surest and the safest method of achieving the economic and political salvation of the country. [...] The Government's policy in regard to the resettlement of the Kistna and the Godavery Districts has evoked strong protest in the Legislative Council which resulted in the appointment by the council with the concurrance of the Madras Government of a Noofficial Committee of Enquiry to enquire into the economic position of the ryots in those districts and to report whether it is such as to warrant
