The whole scene impressed me deeply and I wished it might [...] Amid a concave hollow in the rocks Scooped out by the hand of the ancient elements Reposes the house of the mountain Buddha The ineffably illumined the serene of face: Seems laughing in the sun the aged and wrinkled shrine Although the austerity of countless winters Hath made its limb-like beams infirm. [...] The underlying idea is that if this were done and the exclusive House-laws of the Manchu dynasty thus abrogated by the marriage of the Emperor to a Chinese lady the anti-dynastic movement in the South must lose most of its force and the way be prepared for the reestablishment of the Monarchy costitutional limited and shorn of all the exclusive Manchu privileges. [...] In the South and especially amongst the vociferous section of students and journalists which lives by and for political agitation in the shelter of the Treaty Ports they will tell you that the restoration of the Throne is impossible and that the Republic represents a genuine expression of the people's will. [...] Meanwhile maintained by the four-million-dollar alowance granted to the Imperial family by the makers of the Republic in 1912 the daily life of the court within the narrow limits of the Forbidden City pursues the eyen tenor of its ancient ways.
