The images of the gods the sound of the temple bells and conchs the sacred shrines with their gilded spires the smoke of the incense the smell of the flower offerings and sandalwood the yogis with their superhuman powers the sanctity of the Brahmans the legends of the Hindu gods who had come down to earth as men these things filled my imaination and created a vast and vaguely distant rea [...] The dust and smoke of the fight the shouts of the soldiers the boom of the guns had ceased. [...] The rising moon the deep black line of the trees on the other side of the Jumna the motionless stretch of the dark blue water of the river the rampart of our fort glimmering above the distant mango grove everything sang to me the silent music of death. [...] That happiness is only illusion that kenote of the old melancholy music of India—was the domnant theme and the bass undertone of the arghul accopanied and followed with something of monotonous solemnity all the treble variations of the singer in the minor key. [...] It seems to' express the true spirit of the dweller in the desert and to manifest itself even in the purpose of the sojourner.
