Founded in 1867, The Indian Medical Gazette was a monthly journal of medicine, surgery, public health, and general medical intelligence. In 1946, the journal was edited by S.D.S. Greval with R.N. Chaudhuri as the Assistant Editor. Published by the Thacker’s Press, Calcutta, the journal published articles, notes, reports, news, extracts, queries, book lists, and book reviews.


Key themes included diseases, diagnosis, treatment, vaccines, medicines, blood banks, medical colleges, pathology, surgery, anesthesia, nutrition, child care, and mortality. The journal also focused on almost all known fields of medical science such as general medicine, cardiology, neurology, psychiatry, nephrology, urology, radiology, orthopedics, dentistry, and hematology. Diseases studied were fever, cholera, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, diarrhea, gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis, jaundice, leprosy, malaria, paralysis, plague, and pneumonia, The editorial articles focused on specific medical issues and themes such as ‘’Penicillin Therapy’, ‘Intravenous Anaesthesia’, ‘The Rh Problem in India’, ‘Stethoscope versus X-rays’, ‘Venereal Diseases in India’, ‘Comfort for the Middle-aged’, ‘Synthetic Folic Acid’, and ‘Antibiotics’.


The journal published reports of various medical associations and missions such as: Annual Report of the British Empire Leprosy Relief Association, Madras Provincial Council; Report of the Pasteur Institute of Southern India, Coonoor; Administration Report of the Medical and Public Health Department of H.E.H. the Nizam’s Government; Report of the Kashmir Mission of the Church Missionary Society; Annual Report of the Ranchi European Mental Hospital; Report of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine; and Annual Report of Research of the College of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. The journal also reproduced excerpts or full texts from other medical journals; for example, Medical Press, Leprosy in India, South African Medical Journal, Australian Journal of Experimental Biology and Medical Science, New Orleans Medical and Surgical Journal, New York Medical Journal, and Pharmaceutical Journal.
