The object of the sluice is to regulate the flow of the flood tides into the Tolly's Nala from the Hughli and the Bidyadhari ends and thus prevent silting. [...] The flood was due to heavy local rainfall and the flow-off of the flooded tract was impeded by the high level of the Ganges and the Jamuna (Brahmaputra) at the time. [...] Investigations into the navigable conditions of the Dhaleswari and Buriganga and the drainage conditions in the area bounded by the Dhaleswari on the north the Padma on the south the Jamuna (Brahmaputra) on the west and the Megna on the east were continued during the year. [...] The following works were completed during the year :- Construction of servants' quarters and a kitchen for the Presidency Post Master on the roof of the General Post Office Calcutta and improvements in the water-supply arrangements for menials on the roof of the building. [...] Construction of a motor car shed and a workshop and godown in the compound of the Central Telegraph Office on the site of the existing pump ; additions and alterations to the Post and Telegraph Office at Vishnupur Kanchrapara Khulna and Jalpaiguri ; sinking a masonry well and filling in the existing tank in the compound of the Post and Telegraph Office at Bagerhat ; improvmentS to the Post.
