Lady Carmichael’s Bengal Women’s War Fund. Report 1st January 1917 to 31st July 1918

1918

On the first floor immediately to the left of the central flight of stairs is the Office of the Depot which leads directly into the " Comforts for the Troops " Department and the Parcels Packing Department while at the top and to the right of the stairs is the home of the Red Cross Department of the DepOt and the Work rooms. [...] The despatch of the monthly parcels and the purchase and despatch of the sporting gear involves a very considerable monthly expenditure and the Finance Committee of the Fund do appeal most earnestly to the subscribers and others not to slacken in their efforts to supply the necessary funds to carry on the work. [...] 16The visits of the officers and men on furlough to the DepOt and the letters received there almost daily from Mesopotamia bear witness to the good work being done and to the necessity for the work if the spirit and moral of the troops are to be maintained. [...] The continuance of a supply of comforts to the Chaplains to the Forces and the Y. M. C. A. for distribution to the sick and needy in the Hospitals and Field Ambulances. [...] In April 1918 when the work of the Comforts Department was re-organised and the scale of Comforts reduced it was decided not to continue this as a separate department but to send cigarettes and tobacco to the troops with the other Comforts and to hand over the rest of the work to the Red Cross and Chaplains' Departments respectively.
