Final Report on the Survey and Settlement of Pargana Dhalbhum in the District of Singhbhum 1906 to 1911

1912

System of administration.--The revenues of the estate being so small and the tract being inaccessible and inhabited by semi-savage races special arrangements were considered necessary for the -administration of the country through the hereditary chiefs of the estate in the early days of British dominion. [...] The zamindar was therefore required to maintain the usual establishment of paiks and to furnish lists of the persons so employed with the statement of their allowances to the Magistrate. [...] The South-West Frontier Agency 1833.—The immediate result of these troubles and the kindred insurrection of the Kole in Ranchi and parts of Singhbhum was the establishment of the South: West Frontier Agency. [...] System of administration after the establishment of the Agency.—From the date of the establishment of the Agency the general system of administrtion and -the revenue history of the pargana (except the small area included in Midnapore) may be said to have merged in that of the rest of Chota Nagpur. [...] Police furisdiction.—Notwithstanding the ill-vicciess of the zamindari system of police the zamindar continued to exercise thepowers of police daroga throughout the estate and to be responsible for the management of the ghatwali force for more than 20 years after the establishment of the SoutWest Frontier Agency.
