In the Deccan for instance the number of holdings which can be called economic that is to say the characteristics of which admit of profitable agriculture is relatively small; whilst over the greater part of Sind the nature and circumstances of the land. [...] (4) The jungles are frequently somewhat inaccessible which greatly enhances the cost of getting out the grass ; and in the case of districts situated at a distance from the jungles the cost of transport makes the price of the grass prohibitive. [...] in the case of cereals mainly to weevils in the cases of pulses to hard seeds and in the case of cotton to damage to the seed in the process of ginning. [...] Most of them owe their origin to the efforts of some individual who takes an interest in aariculture and is anxious to be helpful in the matter of agricultural improvement ; and the °tendency is for the work of each Association to represent the activities and energy of the individual. [...] In the deep black soils of the Krishna Valley and in parts of the Dharwar District I have been told of the difficulty of preventing the wells falling in during construction while at Khandpur (Belgaum District) the wells when constructed have a tendency to fall in and to fill up with mud brought up from below.
