I. THE POTTERY OF AHICHCHHATRA The ruins of Ahichchhatra (the ancient capital of the kingdom of North Nahala) are situated about seven miles to the north of Aonla a subdivisional town in the Bareilly district and about half a mile to the north-east of the village of Rdmnagar which is even now known to the Jainas as Ahichchhatra. [...] This inscription was discovered by the expedition of the Oriental Institute of Chicago on the lower parts of three of the walls of the monument which has now with great probability been identified as a fire temple of Achaemenid times 1. The northern wall of the building which contains a doorway at a certain elevation from the soil faces the rock tombs of Darius and other Achaemenids and bears n [...] The Shahpur inscription is of great importance for the data it furnishes on the political and religious situation of the Sassanid empire and on the history of the third Christian century in general 3. After an introductory section containing the formulary of the king's titles the text of the inscription gives an enumeration of the different parts of his empire for a great part territories which [...] These areas are the Ghaggar Valley in the North the now dried-up bed of the ancient holy Sarasvati together with the southern fringe of the Panj ab adjoining to the East and West the group of oases centering round Bikaner City and finally the westernmost fringe of Marwar on the eastern border. [...] the Adinatha in which the `renaissance' tradition of the 15th century reaches its apogee; but during the heyday of Mughal rule the Hindu cult was reduced to the seclusion of some palace chapels and with the exception of a renovation of the Karniji Temple at Deshnoke no new temples were constructed until the beginning of the 19th century.
