Memoirs of the Department of Agriculture in India A note on Hydrocyanic Acid in the Burma Bean (Phaseous Lunatus SP)

1923

The results obtRinPd up to the date of my departure are recorded in this note in the hope that they may be of assistance in the further prosecution of the work. [...] For the determination of HCN in the seed and plant parts of the Burma bean in almost every instance at least two of the above methods were employed. [...] The experiment may also be noted as a case in which the enzyme powder process fails unless the enzymes existing in the tissue to be examined are destroyed before addition of the enzyme pdwder."14 A NOTE ON HYDROCYANIC ACID IN THE BURMA BEAN The total HCN content of this leaf as determined by boiling and extraction was— Free HCN trace. [...] By subtracting the initial HCN content of the liquor the HCN derived from the leaf is obtained. [...] The initial HCN content of the liquor is seen from these figures to have a marked effect upon the rate of evolution of HCN by the leaf.
