In 1789 and 1825 what are practically reprints of Bourne's version appeared in John Brand's History and Antiquities of the Town and Country of the Town of Newcastle-upon-Tyne Vol. [...] In the Notes that I append to the text I have sought to do three things : to justify the readings or emendations that I adopt; to illustrate by reference to other Middle English poetical texts the conventional character of bur author's phraseotod; and thirdly to indicate (as no previous editor Ilas done) how in the details of its handling of the story of Noah our play compares with other earl [...] As for the stanza-forms that appear in the play it is cetain that the original exhibited at least quatrains a b a b (somtimes of four at other times of three beats) and six-line stanzas riming either a b a b a b or a a b c c b (of four beats or three or both mixed). [...] However in my way of dividing the lines the play in its present corrupt state exhibits twenty-seven stanzas riing a b a b sixababab twoaabccb one each riming a b a a b ababa abababab ababbaa b aababaiib a a b c c b d d b a couplet a a and a fragment of a stanza...a b... [...] It has been suggested in turns that our author drew upon the French Mysteries the York cycle Avitus that the Angel and the Devil correspond to the Good Angel and the Vice of the Moralities and so forth.
