Public Works Department Administration Report for the Year 1920-21 Part II Irrigation Works Accounts and Statistical Statements

1922

The highest readings for the year were 15 feet on the Bukkur gauge on the 4th August and 21'4 feet on the Kotri gauge on the 8th August as compared with 14'7 and 22'4 feet on the Bukkur and Kotri gauges respectively in 1919 and the recorded maximum readings on these two gauges of 17'9 feet and 23'8 feet respectively. [...] In the compartment in`front of the Haibat loop bund the water was allowed to impound during the Abkalani and by means of a sluice built just upstream of the head regulator the water was let out of the compartment into the Unharwah after the river had fallen ; this helped the crops to a certain extent and gave the Unharwah about one-third of its full supply for 15 days. [...] The new head regulator is only 7 miles from the river and in order to give full supply to the Choi Branch a gauge reading of 12 feet has to be maintained at the 6th mile of the Begari as even with a gauge reading of 9 feet the Choi Branch gets nothing ; thus the Choi Branch is a source of anxiety to the supply of the Begari Canal when the gauge reading at 6th mile is less than 10 feet or so. [...] Owing to the change in the previous method of distribution the supply in the whole system was more than satisfactory from the very commencement of the season till about the third week of August. [...] It will help to prevent the silt deposit which results in deficiency at the end of the season as it will allow of a greater volume of water being taken in for the use of lands in the first 10 miles and will also probably cause a better flow in the Pritchard and less chance of silt accumulating in the head portion due to the closing of the Head Regulator.
