The following extract from the Report of the Committee t)f Circuit best describes the functions of the Nawab Nazim as the administrator of criminal justice in Bengal and of the officers employed under him in the exercise of those functions :- The Nazim 04s supreme magistrate presides personally in the trial of capital offenders ; the deputy of the Nazim takes cognizance of quarrels frays an [...] In order to enable the' Commissioners of Revenue and Circuit to devote a sufficient portion of their time to the discharge of the duties of the former office as well as to provide for the more speedy trial and commitment of criminal offenders the Government transferred the duties of the Sessions t9 the Judges of the chief Civil Courts of the districts. [...] The first three will necessarily treat of the police of the districts in the interior in Calcutta and its suburbs and of the appointment of the members of the several forces. [...] of 1817 of the Bengal Code it was amongst other things declared that it shall be the duty of the police-darogahs under the guidance and instruction of the Magistrate to prepare and keep a coplete register of the villagwatchmen employed within the limits of their police-stations ; and upon the death or removal of any of the watchmen the landholders and other persons to whom the right of [...] ADMINISTRATION OF POLICE IN BENGAL.-With regard to the aministration%of the police of the district under the Government of Begal the powers of the local authorities have been defined by a 'set of rules abstracted below which were appended to the Resolution of the 22nd September 1862_ The administration of the police throughout the local jurisdiction of the Magistrate of a District is vest
