Report on the Operations of the Department of Agriculture.Madras Presidency For the Year 1928-29

1929

Hon'ble the Viscount Goschen the Governor of Madras did us the great honour to preside over the opening of the Conference and Her Excellency graciously presented the medals and prizes won by students in the College and University examinations. [...] The Government have contributed a sustantial grant towards the erection of the buildings and the Agricultural Department will find the technical teacher and the manager for the school farm but the bulk of the cost will fall on the Board. [...] Agriculture in elementary schools.—I continued to preside over a committee appointed by the Director of Public Instruction to examine the possibility of introducing agriculture into the curriculum of the secondary and middle schools in the Presidency on the lines adopted in the Punjab. [...] The effect of the season on the crop at the Agricultural Stations and on the work of demonstrating agricultural improvements in the districts is described below :- At Anakapalle floods reduced the yield of paddy and damaged some of the experimental plots. [...] It would appear however that yield does not depend on the actual time of sowing but rather on the length of the interval between the date of sowing and the incidence and strength of the north-west monsoon rains.
