Size of the sample.—In a Technological Laboratory established with the object of testing annually a large number of samples on behalf of the Agricultural Departments and the trade the normal size of a sample is a matter of considerable importance. [...] For the better class cottons the drafts from the card onwards are so arranged that the draft in the ring frame for the yarn of 30's counts is about 6 and different counts are obtained merely by changing the draft in the ring frame. [...] The difficulty arose however that a change in the spinning speed might render invalid a comparison of the results obtained before and after the date of the change unless it could be shown that the change in speed makes no difference to the results of the test. [...] Adjusting the number of fibres according to the fineness or coarseness of a cotton obviates the necessity of calibrating the balance along the entire length of the scale. [...] The results and the conclusions of this investigation will be found in a series of Technological Bulletins entitled " Studies in the Sampling of cotton for the Determination of fibre-properties." The following table which is taken from Part III of t his series * shows the degree of reliability which can be placed on the mean value of a given number of observations for any one of the fibre-proper
