PREFACE THE object of the present Bulletin of the Department of Historical and Antiquarian Studies Assam is to perptuate the memory of Mrs. [...] At a time when the Government of our province was passing through a phase of serious financial stringency the gift of Rai Bahadur Handiqui gave the Government a great relief by eliminating the necessity of providing funds to house the Department of Historical and Antiquarian Studies which was fast proving its usefulness in disseminating knowledge of the past history of Assam and in stimulating a [...] 393 to defray the cost of a wooden frame for the portrait and all other expenses connected with the function including that of the tea-party and of the publication of this Bulletin. [...] I need add only the fewest possible words to the full exposition just given by Professor Bhuyan of the aims and objects and of the work of the Department of Historical and Antiquarian Studies Assam. [...] The wealth of Ahom literature and antiquities the interaction of the Ahom kingdom with Chutiya Kachari Koch Kamrupa Moghal and other States and Kingdoms has made it natural and inevitable that the greater part of the Department's activities should have hitherto been con-HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR'S SPEECH 33 fined to the Brahmaputra Valley the seat of the Ahom kingdom.
