The story of this bank which by the bye is a note-bank is but a cumulative record of loans granted to the government and of the goernment's appreciation of its services by allowing it to ignore the law in regard to the relation between notes and metallic reserve as well as the oliligitioti to redeem its notes in specie. [...] Soon after the formation of modern Italy there was passed the law of 1874 to bring some sort of order out of the chaos in the banking world. [...] Altogether then it will appear that the work that Young Bengal as well as the whole of Young India have been able to show in the line of joint stock banking during the period of Swadeshi movement is not insignificant in the background of the beginnings" of "modern" banking in the Western world. [...] It is to be hoped that it will set an example to the dozens of new banks that are going to be started in the course of the next few years."BENGALI BANKING IN COMPARATIVE BANK STATISTICS 13 Three Directions of Growth This is not the occasion to discuss the policies and business metods of the general run of the existing Loan Offices.
