From that year the natives reckoned that the British raj or dominion had struck its roots deep in the land ; year after year since then the pride and wealth and power of the British had grown until the shadow of their name stretched over the continent from the snowy peaks 9"The Story of the Mutiny of the Himalayas to the green seas washing the shores of Ceylon. [...] The twilight of dawn gave way before the sun which shooting up over the rim of the world shone on the rifles the sabres and the accoutrements of the white soldiers and revealed the scene of shame plainly to every eye. [...] The dawn of the next day found the lines of the native soldiery in their habitual Sunday quietude ; things went on in their customary routine but as the fierce heat of the Indian sun beat down dwing the day. sending the Europeans to their darkened rooms and their sofas it did not have the usual effect of sinking the native soldiery into the torpor of sleep. [...] As the dawning light broke over.the beautifuLminarets and cliffy walls of the splendid palace beside the river there came the cry of the muezzin from the summit of the tower beside the bulb-like dome of the great mosque the Jamma Masjid. [...] In the midst of the terrible heat of the afternoon the officers and white women in the main-guard sat or stood in what angles of shade they could find waiting for they knew not what while the companies of native soldiery stood at ease in their ranks lOyalty breaking down more and more as they heard the roar of the crowd the rattle of firearm and the shouts of exulttion from the city.
