Eighteenth Annual Report of the Bombay Smoke-nuisances Commission for the Year 1930-31

1931

The following table summarises and compares the work of the year and that of the preceding year in the three areas :-- Observations of chimneys. [...] The actual density of the smoke emitted from the chimneys of such factories is scarcely above scale 4 but without adequate means to draw away the smoke from inside the premises in such a crowded city like Bombay the health of the public living close by must be impaired. [...] The average number of ships in the Alexandra Victoria and Prince's Docks fell considerably during the early part of the year but in the latter half it has been much better with the result that the total average for the year is almost the same as that of the previous year. [...] This was due to the smaller pressure of boiler inspection work in the districts consequent on the diminution of the Lloyd Barrage `Yorks and on the grouping of inspections of mofussil boilers. [...] 6. On this basis the average of smoke of the three highest densities was equal to 477 minute per hour of dense black smoke for each of the 2 60() observations of the chimneys for one hour in Bombay during the year as compared with 51 minute per hour for the preceding year.
